Ferns

Leatherwood Fern
The Leatherwood Fern, ‘Dryopteris marginalis,’ is also called the Marginal Shield Fern. This evergreen fern will typically form a non-spreading vase shaped clump that is around two feet in height. This woodland fern can be most often found in shaded crevices of rocky ledges and bluffs. Leatherwood Ferns have grayish green, leathery fronds that are deeply cut and can reach almost two feet in length. This fern prefers loamy moist soils, and will grow best in a cool location of the garden. Afternoon sun should be avoided. The evergreen fronds are attractive and will provide good interest to a winter landscape.
