Bristlecone Pine
The Bristlecone Pine, ‘Pinus aristata,’ can live for up to five thousand years, which is much longer than any other living thing known. Its cones are tipped with slender spines or bristles, which is where the tree receives its common name. It produces dense growth, and its shoots are set with dark, short needles that grow in bundles of five. It has an irregular mature form, but is very popular in its arid mountain homes of Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona simply for its very long life. In cultivation, the Bristlecone pine grows slow, bushy and dark, and will be able to endure very difficult sites.
